'The Fly Catcher'

By Angus MacFarlane

It is morning. With the sun shining brightly behind the cloud covered sky, this morning is not unlike most summer mornings in Newcastle. However, thinking again, it is different for it has failed to rain - so far. Give it time... it will come. As I sit here, admiring the weather that this flat, ugly country has to offer, I think back to the times when life used to be simple.

It all started one quiet evening a Paris cafe, drinking some friends. The evening started peacefully and was rather civil - apart from the odd 'piggy back battle' the evening was uneventful. After quietly sipping our wine watching the evening tick along, we decided to move to another location. At this stage the evening was slowly turning into morning. Our spirits although high, our energy levels were dipping.... and then it happened. The even that has since changed my life dramatically. Whilst sitting with two lovely ladies by my side, I faced a rather ugly gentleman (the term gentleman is used loosely!). With low energy levels the gentleman opposite yawned, and as if by natural I started to yawn minutes later. The gentleman then 'turned around' and told a joke, in which interrupted my yawn. Then it came the fatal blow, like out of the blue, the killer sentence spoken from the evil gentleman.

"He he, Angus didn't finish off his yawn. Now he has to yawn again as he did not complete his yawn".

At first it appeared as an innocent comment for in my innocence I did not truly see the evil behind his comment. That is until the next morning when feeling tired and yawned. My mind then recalled the previous evening and I got to thinking "did I 'complete' my yawn?" and whilst pondering this question, sure enough I yawn again and again and again. Each time asking myself if it was a completed yawn and each time this itself triggers off another yawn. What is a complete yawn? Without an answer to this question, no yawn is complete.

My peaceful days have since gone. My life is now 'normal' until the first yawn of the day. After which...the day is occupied by continuous yawning, catching flies as I walk around. How can one live like this?

I can no longer live like this, therefore I have decided to share my story with you. Now you will be a fellow fly catcher. Beware of evil friends!
